  • Burns Paiute Tribe

< Back Burns Paiute Tribe The Burns Paiute Tribe is a community of 210 people dedicated to the healthy development of our families. While maintaining the endurance of cultural values and the protection of our vital natural resources, community members enjoy a healthy lifestyle with ample opportunity for vocational and recreational activities. Thanks to the Tribe’s early emphasis on health, wellness and education, our social and justice programs are minimal since the issues that require the need for those programs have all but been eliminated. Tribal leadership is strong, fair and a great model to be followed by future generations of Burns Paiute leaders. The Burns Paiute Reservation is located in rural eastern Oregon. The Burns Paiute Tribe is primarily comprised of the descendants of the Wadatika Band of Northern Paiutes. The traditional homelands of the Burns Paiute include 5250 square miles of land in central-southeastern Oregon, Northern Nevada, northwestern California and western Idaho. The Burns Paiute still maintain aboriginal title to much of our aboriginal territory. The Tribe currently has 402 enrolled members of which 142 people call the Reservation their home. We are a relatively “young” community with over 50% of our population being under the age of 18. • Canoe Journey Herbalists

< Back Canoe Journey Herbalists Canoe Journey Herbalists is an Indigenous-centered, community-supported project consisting of herbalists, healers, and dedicated volunteers. Throughout the year, we grow, gather, and craft thousands of herbal remedies by creating collaborations with Coastal Salish communities and ally organizations. These medicines are then offered as part of a free, decolonized herbal and Indigenous healing space for the largest gathering of Coastal Salish communities in the Pacific Northwest, the Intertribal Canoe Journey. We believe that access to traditional medicine, ancestral connection, and health sovereignty are integral to healing personal and collective wounds of trauma and colonization. We enact these beliefs by providing opportunities to connect with plant healing, supporting Indigenous communities through responding to community needs and fostering pathways for learning about plant medicine and decolonization through year-round workshops and knowledge-sharing. • Turtle Valley Foods

< Back Turtle Valley Foods In 2016 we decided we were burnt out on wondering where our family's food was coming from, how it was raised, and trying to read all those $10 words in the ingredients list. After a lot of research on where we could find food that we could feed our children guilt-free we came to a realization...that kind of food just couldn't be found in our area. In 2019 after several years of gardening and raising some turkeys, chickens, and pigs we realized that if we couldn't find these kinds of foods in the grocery store then there must be others out there that want the peace of mind that comes with serving their family wholesome, healthy, delicious, local food. With that realization, we officially launched Turtle Valley Foods in 2019. Since our founding, we have encountered people from all walks of life from our community on the Coeur d' Alene reservation in north Idaho, and surrounding communities like Post Falls, Coeur d' Alene, Moscow, Sandpoint, and everywhere in between that were on the same search for food they could be proud to put on the dinner table every night. Since we started this farm journey we have realized that the regenerative farming practices we believe in and use on our farm have the power to heal the land, our people, and our communities, and build a local resilient food economy. Farming for us is not just about making a living, it's about improving the health of the communities we serve in all its forms physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and economic. • Dot Ranch

< Back Dot Ranch Story: Here at Dot Ranch, we pride ourselves on our stewardship of both land and animal. We raise some of the oldest breeds of domesticated animals in all the Americas. The central focus of our ranch is the oldest breed of domesticated sheep in America, the Navajo-Churro Sheep. We also raise one of the oldest goat breeds, Navajo Angora Goats, and the second oldest chicken of the United States, the Mottled Java. Our ducks are the oldest domesticated animal in the Americas, Muscovy Ducks, and we also breed the venerable Irish Dexter Cattle. We choose to work with heritage breeds instead of more common, modern production bred animals because we believe that ranching is about more than just the bottom line, it's about history, conservation, and preserving the spirit of the American West. There's more to our animals than RFID tags and recorded weights, there's a sense of connection that only comes from daily and intensely personal interaction. When we say our animals are pasture raised, we genuinely mean they live with grass beneath their hooves and open air above their heads. Our calves are born in the field, and our lambs are born in the field or in the barn, depending on whether the weather is good enough for pasture based lambing. Our animals are grass fed, which means that they get to graze year around, and they receive grass and alfalfa hay when our grass isn't growing as fast. During winter, we bring the sheep and cattle back in to sacrifice pasture so that the rest of our pastures can get a break and regrow. Even then, our animals are never confined indoors, and they always have open access to field or barn. We never use hormones or medically unnecessary antibiotics, and we never submit our animals to unnecessary vaccinations or medications. We keep detailed health records on all of our animals, so we know who has sneezed when and why for. This allows us to provide the highest quality care to our animals, and the highest quality products to your family. All too often today, people have no idea where their food comes from, or what's in it. In urban communities, it is often difficult, if not outright impossible, for people to grow their own food, and the cost of unprocessed food continues to skyrocket. Certified Organic doesn't mean what people assume, and Locally Sourced often is only as local as the continent it's sold on. Navigating food labels and certifications is a maze of regulations that rarely reflect the words used. Factory farming, with its reliance on bigger, quicker, faster, has turned its back on the animals that kept our ancestors alive. We would like to see that change. We believe in the right of every day people to know where their food comes from, and to know how it was produced. When you buy lamb, beef, poultry, or eggs from Dot Ranch, you're getting more than just a good deal. You're also getting the assurance of knowing, beyond doubt, that you are supporting an actual family with your purchase. You're getting meat from identifiable animals, who were named, loved, and treated with dignity throughout their lives. We welcome visitors to come see for themselves just how our animals are treated, so that you too, can eat with a conscience.
