- Turtle Valley Foods
< Back Turtle Valley Foods In 2016 we decided we were burnt out on wondering where our family's food was coming from, how it was raised, and trying to read all those $10 words in the ingredients list. After a lot of research on where we could find food that we could feed our children guilt-free we came to a realization...that kind of food just couldn't be found in our area. In 2019 after several years of gardening and raising some turkeys, chickens, and pigs we realized that if we couldn't find these kinds of foods in the grocery store then there must be others out there that want the peace of mind that comes with serving their family wholesome, healthy, delicious, local food. With that realization, we officially launched Turtle Valley Foods in 2019. Since our founding, we have encountered people from all walks of life from our community on the Coeur d' Alene reservation in north Idaho, and surrounding communities like Post Falls, Coeur d' Alene, Moscow, Sandpoint, and everywhere in between that were on the same search for food they could be proud to put on the dinner table every night. Since we started this farm journey we have realized that the regenerative farming practices we believe in and use on our farm have the power to heal the land, our people, and our communities, and build a local resilient food economy. Farming for us is not just about making a living, it's about improving the health of the communities we serve in all its forms physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, and economic. - Wapato Island Farm
< Back Wapato Island Farm We are a woman-owned, 32-acre working farm located on Wapato Island (Sauvie Island) in Portland, Oregon. Surrounded by the Columbia River, Wapato Island Farm has maintained ecological integrity, resiliency, and organic standards as it continues to thrive in our climate-vulnerable Pacific Northwest region. The land has hosted a diverse variety of seed, including the sacred three sister crops of corn, beans, and squash. It provides a home for wildlife, and has remained an integral part of Sauvie Island’s working land and community. We recognize that this land we call our home was also sacred land that the Multnomah Tribe lived upon before colonization. We honor the importance of acknowledging sacred tribal homelands and are grateful that we have been able to care for the land for so many years. Wapato Island Farm has been in our family for over a decade, and our family has grown and changed with the land over the years — learning from it and becoming wiser with it. Our apothecary is a space for making medicine and houses ethically grown and harvested plants, grown here on our farm or wildcrafted in the Oregon wilderness. We handcraft herbal smoked salts, tinctures, salves, vinegars, essences, elixirs and hydrosols — each batch an artistic, intuitive medicine in which we deepen our relationship with the plants. Our medicines are made in the practice of folk herbalism — meaning, our relationship with the plants and the medicine we make with them is a reflection of our indigenous and ancestral ties and the relationship our ancestors had with Mother Earth. Our practice of folk herbalism combines indigenous wisdom, cultural and ancestral tradition, and reliance on the plants as the healers. - Burns Paiute Tribe
< Back Burns Paiute Tribe The Burns Paiute Tribe is a community of 210 people dedicated to the healthy development of our families. While maintaining the endurance of cultural values and the protection of our vital natural resources, community members enjoy a healthy lifestyle with ample opportunity for vocational and recreational activities. Thanks to the Tribe’s early emphasis on health, wellness and education, our social and justice programs are minimal since the issues that require the need for those programs have all but been eliminated. Tribal leadership is strong, fair and a great model to be followed by future generations of Burns Paiute leaders. The Burns Paiute Reservation is located in rural eastern Oregon. The Burns Paiute Tribe is primarily comprised of the descendants of the Wadatika Band of Northern Paiutes. The traditional homelands of the Burns Paiute include 5250 square miles of land in central-southeastern Oregon, Northern Nevada, northwestern California and western Idaho. The Burns Paiute still maintain aboriginal title to much of our aboriginal territory. The Tribe currently has 402 enrolled members of which 142 people call the Reservation their home. We are a relatively “young” community with over 50% of our population being under the age of 18. - Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians - Health Clinic's Garden Program
< Back Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians - Health Clinic's Garden Program The Garden Program is a new program being developed by the CTSI Siletz Tribal Community Health Clinic to steward a 38-acre property into a diversified organic practicing farm that provides healthy food options and cultural opportunities for Tribal members. The program seeks to improve the health of our community and Siletz Tribal members by providing access to clean organic produce, outdoor recreation, and culturally congruent activities in a safe space. The stewardship of the land is guided by a Garden Committee, the needs of our community, Traditional Ecological Knowledge pathways, and a variety of internal and external partnerships. Half of the landscape is designated wetlands with wetland meadows, shrub/tree wetlands, and a seasonal creek that is being stewarded to host and enhance habitat for native plants and animals with a focus on Beaver habitat. The remainder of the landscape is being stewarded to support the needs of our community. The program has installed a rainwater catchment system that will serve vegetable and plant production, a 5-acre garden with an exclusion fence to deter grazing animals such as Elk and Deer, a greenhouse nursery for plant and vegetable production, various facility and access renovations for programming activities, and are creating a Garden Master Plan that will continue to guide the future activities in the landscape.
